Audiopium is Boonie Mayfield’s second album built entirely around his six-person collective of the same name featuring: Himself & Jordan Craft of ‘Play Cousin’, iStayJammin & Jesse Saturn of ‘iLL University’, plus Giane May and Samia Blaque. Written and recorded during a difficult transitional period, the album became a loose and playful weed-filled party record about big dreams, hometown pride, working-class life, relationships, ambition, and making something vivid out of limited circumstances. Songs like “@Work” push back against both the dismissal of artists who have not yet achieved commercial success and hip-hop’s tendency to look down on ordinary jobs, while “Stay Fresh” sums up the collective’s resourcefulness in one line: “We make hits with way less, it's much more...”

While producing the album, Boonie was heavily immersed in the Purple Rain film and soundtrack. He only later recognized how much Audiopium resembled his own version of The Revolution in spirit. Similar to Prince & The Revolution’s lineup, Audiopium was also made up of four men and two women. Although the parallel was neither musical or lyrical, both groups created the feeling of a central artist surrounded by a distinct cast of personalities whose chemistry became part of the music itself. At its core, Audiopium is meant to feel like a party, where hardship gets transformed into humor, bravado, community, and fun. The music was the escape, and the group became part of the high.
